IC 1318 The Butterfly Nebula
IC 1318 is the nebula that surrounds Gamma Cygni, the brightest star in this photograph, in this image obtained through the use of narrow band filters we can see how the different gases come together to give shape to this nebula that suggests the shape of a butterfly. The star Gamma Cygni is not actually part of this nebula, it is a foreground star located halfway between us and the nebula. This nebula is more than 3,000 light years from us.
