NGC 2264 or Sharpless 273- The Fox Fur Nebula
S Monocetoris is the bluish-white dwarf star that can be seen in the center of this image, belonging to the open cluster NGC 2264. It is surrounded by the nebula cataloged as Sharpless 273. The star is located about 2,500 light-years away . It is a binary system with an orbital period of 25 years. The Fox Fur Nebula is part of a much larger complex usually called the Christmas Tree Cluster, which also includes the Cone Nebula. The reddish areas of the nebula are caused by Hydrogen being excited by the hottest stars, while the blue areas only reflect starlight from the surrounding dust clouds.
